I made this for my high school final exam in Arts. The assignment was to use Greek mythology; the rest was up to us. I really liked the story of Icarus. I decided not to show the fall of Icarus, but the moment before, because that moment is, I think, much more dramatic. Icarus in all his glory, his wings melting but he is to fixated on the beauty of the sun to notice.

I made the canvas myself and used a pvc-tube to let the canvas come forward. After I finished painting I used sculpting wax to show Icarus’s melting wings.
I hope the additional photo’s give you an idea of what the painting looks like in the 3D world.

Used mediums:
Acrylics, wax and magazine pages on canvas
Canvas, wooden framing and pvc tube
55x100x35 cm

I did some experimentation with 3 dimensional canvases when I was at college....I think your's is better though

...great idea...well executed...I'm not great at criting abstract stuff so I have little more to add...sorry!

Definitely one of the more ingenuitive pieces I've seen here in a long time. We are slowly getting a bigger influx of non-digital paintings/drawings and I'm extremely grateful for it.

i like it, i don't like a lot of abstract painters because i don't think they get thier
point across to the on lookers. but your painting definitly reflects it's title.

I used pictures from advertisements in magazines, looking mainly for the right colors, but I also wanted te picturefragments to be recoginizable.

About the plant: didn't even notice that. That plant stands on that closet for a really long time... hmm you've got a point... but then again, it would be really unfair for the plant to rob it of it's one chance to be famous

Pros:

I like the use of a 3d canvas, and mixed media, also the vibrant colours and their contrast with the black outlines.

Cons:

The only thing I think is a negative is that big emty space in the top left corner which doesn't quite work. I know that abstract paintings are hard to do so I won't be too picky.

Overall opinion/feedback:

I think that the collage of diffrent shots of this painting should be shown separately, because it blends in with the picture and interferes with it.
